Summary

Poly Tour Spin G, a polyester tennis string from Yonex, was clearly designed for big hitters in search of spin. Not only does it have a grippy pentagonal cross section, but it also was made with a special silicone oil infusion to facilitate the snapback required for heavy ball rotation. To top it off, our TW lab results place this string on the firm end of the stiffness spectrum, which means it can accommodate the most powerful upward cuts without spraying the ball into another time zone. According to our playtesters, Poly Tour Spin G definitely lived up to its spin-friendly design. Granted, we didn't find it as grippy as Dunlop Black Widow or WeissCannon Black 5 Edge, but that didn't keep it from earning a very respectable spin score. The most striking feature of Poly Tour Spin G was that it gave us the control (and freedom!) to attack the ball with our most powerful strokes. The downside of a high control string like Poly Tour Spin G is that it is invariably too firm and underpowered for a large section of players, including those with tender tendons or compact strokes. Another minor complaint was levied against the string's surface, which became slightly worn over time, resulting in some dreaded string straightening toward the end of the test. Ultimately, though, for big hitters who like swinging big and having the ball land on schedule, Poly Tour Spin G is an awfully attractive option. The fact that it delivered above average tension maintenance is a nice added bonus.

Power - Score: 40 / Control - Score: 92

For our team, Poly Tour Spin G played with outstanding control. The moderate power level made it easy for Marco to swing for power. He explained, "This string offered a lot more control than power. It suited my game perfectly because it allowed me to swing as big as I wanted and generate pace on my own terms. The control was there from all areas of the court, whenever I needed it."

Like Marco, Michelle takes huge cuts at the ball and doesn't need any extra power from her strings. She said, "I would say this string felt more control-oriented than power-oriented, which is why I really enjoyed the playtest. It was a lower powered string, which is exactly what I look for as a big hitter who can generate more than enough of my own power. I could confidently take big cuts at the ball and was rewarded with control when I needed it. I felt like it allowed me to confidently play the game I like to play, which is first strike tennis. Offensively, it allowed me to swing out without making too many mistakes, and defensively it let me hit deep and heavy balls, which complements my game style."

Spin - Score: 83

With its five-sided shape (for bite) and slippery construction (for snapback), Poly Tour Spin G is a legitimate spin machine. Even Michelle, with her flatter mechanics, found it easy to generate spin with this string. She said, "Sometimes, with my flatter strokes, I don't realize how much spin potential strings have. However, this was one of those strings that I knew had good spin because there were times when I thought my shot was going to be a couple inches out but the bite from the string helped add some arch to keep the ball inside the baseline. I liked the bite I got when I was dipping balls, and on kick serves."

This playtest turned Marco into a believer, as Spin G made his list of favorite spin strings. He said, "I really enjoyed the spin this string generated for me, and I didn't have to force the issue too much. The five-sided pentagon shape really does add some bite on all strokes, and this has become one my favorite shaped polys to play with. I definitely got the ball diving down on target and always felt connected to where my shots were landing."

Comfort - Score: 68

Although Poly Tour Spin G posted a relatively high stiffness number in our Tennis Warehouse String Lab, this poly is far from the stiffest string at TW. Not surprisingly, our team of seasoned poly users reported zero issues with discomfort. In fact, Marco found Spin G to be quite comfortable. He said, "As with most polyester strings, this is fairly firm string, but I found it to play with a surprising level of comfort. There was only a slight amount of shock when I caught the ball off-center. It felt more comfortable than most of my go-to polys, like Luxilon ALU Power 15 and Solinco Tour Bite 16."

"There were no comfort issues for me," said Michelle, who could probably handle 14 gauge steel if push came to shove. "I would say this is a medium firm poly, and most polys in that category don't bother me. I strung my Wilson Pro Staff RF97 Autograph at 57 lbs and didn't have any arm or comfort issues."

Feel - Score: 84

Our team gave Poly Tour Spin G high marks for feel. Michelle appreciated how firm and consistent it felt over time. She said, "This string's firmness made me feel very connected to the ball. I was worried that with tension loss I would lose that feeling, but luckily the strings never got mushy. I really only notice strings going mushy when they are softer polys. This stiffer, deader string is more my style, and as it wore out it just lost some liveliness and went dead (lower powered) instead of becoming overly soft and mushy."

"When I made contact around the sweetspot the feel was soft and responsive, and there was good pocketing," said Marco. "When I hit the ball off center the Tour Spin G felt firmer and less powerful, but it never felt too stiff or dead. I always felt in control of my shots and was never surprised by how the ball was flying off the strings. Some players might find this string too firm, but it played pretty soft for me."

Playability Duration - Score: 91

Our team found Poly Tour Spin G had above average tension maintenance and playability duration for a polyester string. Although Marco liked how long this string retained its controlled feel, he did experience some frictional wear toward the end of the test. He said, "This string maintained tension very well for me and also held its control for a surprisingly long period of time. The coating provided good snap back during most of the test, but toward the end there was some minor notching and wear to the string's exterior, which resulted in the string getting stuck out of place."

For Michelle, this is one of the few polys that survived her brutal power for longer than two weeks. She said, "I found the durability to be better than average. As I mentioned above, as the string wore out its playability didn't change, so I didn't feel like I had to restring after two weeks. I still had the same control from the first day of the playtest to the last."

Overall - Score: 90

What type of player would you recommend this to?

Marco - "I think big hitters who are looking for a little added spin and control will find good use out of this string. This is a great string for players who need a low powered string so they can swing bigger and add their own power. Players with slower strokes might find this a bit too dead."

Michelle - "I'd recommend this to bigger hitters who can generate their own power and are looking to add some control into their game, as well as players familiar with poly that might have a powerful racquet they want to tame. Anyone who swings fast and big will like this string!"

Likes

Marco - "I could generate ample spin and felt very connected to my game with this string."

Michelle - "Poly Tour Spin G is low powered and control oriented -- it let me provide my own power, and I was rewarded with bite and control."

Dislikes

Marco - "None."

Michelle - "None."

Comparing the string to others they've tried, our testers said:

Marco - "The spin Poly Tour Spin G generated reminded me of Diadem Solstice Power. Although Diadem Solstice Power gave me slightly more spin, Tour Spin G had more than enough for my liking and came with longer playability and better tension maintenance."

Michelle - "The feel of Poly Tour Spin G was similar to Luxilon Savage to me -- same lower powered response with the extra bite when I needed it. It's also a bit like Solinco Tour Bite, but I would say Poly Tour Spin G felt a bit more comfortable and offered more of a connected-to-the-ball feel."
