Which type of tennis string is right for me
With so many different string choices out there, how do you pick the right string for your game? Here's a quick guide to the different types of tennis strings out there and how to know which one is the best fit for you.
Natural Gut:
What it is: Lots of natural fibers made from actual cow intestine - a part of it called the "serosa". These fibers are woven or twisted together and are often encapsulated with a special coating to protect the string from the elements.
How it plays: In terms of power, comfort, feel and tension maintenance, natural gut is king - nothing performs better. There's simply no synthetic string that offers the level of playability that natural gut does.
Who it's for: Simply the best option for players looking for premium power, comfort and feel. Also, if you don't break strings often it's a great option for you because of its exceptional tension maintenance.
Multifilament:
What it is: A synthetic alternative to natural gut that's designed/produced in a similar way. Lots of little fibers - usually made of nylon - woven or twisted together.
How it plays: There are lots of different types of multifilaments that all perform a little differently, but they generally offer good power, comfort and feel (like natural gut). Some are designed in a way that makes them a little less powerful and more controllable while still retaining good comfort.
Who it's for: Players with shorter, slower strokes who want power, comfort and feel but don't want to break the bank for natural gut.
Polyester:
What it is: A single strand of material (mono-filament) that's extruded during production. Chemical additives are often added to the basic nylon to give the string more comfort and feel.
How it plays: Stiffer and lower-powered than almost all other string types. They allow you to swing big and provide control, spin and durability to players that can generate all their own power.
Who it's for: Players with long, fast strokes that can generate all their own power. These strings can feel stiff and jarring to less experienced players with under-developed strokes.
Synthetic Gut:
What it is: Nylon strings that are constructed with a solid core and at least one layer of outer wraps.
How it plays: Known for providing all-around playability. You get a little bit of everything without it being exceptional at one attribute in particular.
Who it's for: Recreational or club players looking for all-around performance at a good value.
