Comments: Third-seeded Pat Rafter slugs it out with the unseeded Goran Ivanisevic, who is at Wimbledon 2001 only because the AELTC gave him a wild card. This match is of interest primarily because Ivanisevic, the dark horse, manages to take the championship from under the favored Rafter's nose in 5 arduous sets of excellent tennis. Rafter, a classic serve-and-volleyer in the tradition of McEnroe, plays some of his best tennis, but Ivanisevic, a lefty with a thunderous serve, gathers his nerve, pulls off some terrific shots, and walks away with the trophy. All in all, it's a match worth watching, despite the contingent of Aussies and Croats loudly and incessantly rooting for their respective favorite, often holding up play, which makes the match, among other things, the LOUDEST and most enthusiastic Wimbledon I've ever watched.
