The 2005 Pro No. 1 gets updated with an all new Fischer technology. Called Magnetic
Speed, the new frames feature
equally polarized magnets at the 3 and 9 o'clock positions designed to return the racquet to
its original position faster than
conventional racquets. Fischer claims the result is greater power and ball speed off the
stringbed. The other big news for 2005 is
the addition of a larger Midplus headsize to accompany the traditional 98 sq. in. version. At a
healthy 105 sq. in. the larger of the
two M Speed Pro No. 1 racquets is just one sq. in. short of being classified as an oversize.
Midplus
This update to the Fischer Pro No. 1 feels softer and more spin friendly. There's a noticeably
flexi feel to this one off the ground
which makes for a very comfortable hitting experience. We found lots of touch and feel
making this a great racquet for stronger
players looking for a very control oriented racquet. Stronger players will find some nice pop
and weight of shot from this 12 ounce
racquet, accompanied by a pleasingly smooth feel at impact. Long smooth swings produce
penetrating shots, but players with
compact swings will have to string this one low to find power. At net this racquet offers
excellent feel and touch. We
found plenty of stability when volleying hard struck shots and a comfortable response from
the stringbed. On serve we found good
access to both topspin and slice. As from other areas of the court, the emphasis is on
control with solid techniques resulting in
consistent serving. All in all this is one solid player's stick that should be on every advanced
player's demo list. The racquet of choice for Marcos Baghdatis.
"Super" Midplus
With its almost oversize proportions, this one will appeal to oversize player's racquet fans as
well as those looking for a forgiving
and slightly more powerful player's racquet. We found excellent access to spin from this
racquet. Like the 98 sq. in.
version, this one offers plenty of flex and comfort off the ground. There's ample feel and
control for touch and placement shots. The
spin friendly nature makes this racquet a joy when hitting off-pace angles and slice drop
shots. At net there's enough pop to put
volleys away, but the overall emphasis is on control and feel. When serving, the impressive
response of the 105 sq. in. continues
with some solid pace, excellent spin and a healthy sweetspot just a swing away. Definitely
worth a test drive if you're seeking a
forgiving player's racquet. Best suited to 4.0+ level players.
