Overview

Wilson updates the feel of one of their most solid spin machines. It’s called the Burn 100 S Countervail and it is ideal for the aggressive player looking to dominate the court with pace and spin. Compared to its predecessor this update offers an increase in flexibility as well as a more head light balance (see comfort and speed). Boasting an 18x16 Spin Effect string pattern, the Burn 100 S puts a tight grip on the ball, resulting in easier access to spin. There’s also some welcomed vibration dampening thanks to the introduction of Countervail - a material technology designed to soften the effects of ball impact and counter muscle fatigue. From the baseline this racquet is slightly easier on the arm than its predecessor. Although the 11.2 ounce weight is manageable for intermediates, the 325 swingweight gives it enough plow through for the more advanced player. The upshot is a racquet that rewards big strokes with a powerful, spin loaded ball that hops off the court. Players with two-handed backhands will appreciate the X2 Shaft, which provides a longer grip for more leverage. On serve the combination of spin, precision and pop will give you the ability to force some very weak replies. With a nice boost in comfort and maneuverability  Wilson has produced an impressive weapon for intermediate and advanced ball strikers.

Comments: I just purchased the racquet and have been using it. The racquet is advertised as 4 point HL but the racquet itself states 7 points HL. A little difference in the balance point. I like the racquet and working on the feel.

Comments: I love this racquet. First, I don't know my NTRP, but I hit regularly with two 4.5 players. I hit with a western grip and usually only hit slice serves. This racquet is quite stiff and if you put a stiff string in it, and your arm is not conditioned for it, you will likely have pain somewhere. Many strings will move significantly with this string pattern and break very quickly. So be forewarned that if your arm can't handle a polyester string, a high tension, etc., it's not a great racquet. If you break strings a lot, be aware that you'll break them even sooner with this racquet. With all that being said, if you want your racquet to have some power and stiffness so you can just block back returns or take something off a forehand, it's really exceptional. You can really use the stiffness and the topspin potential to take nice cuts at the ball. You also have a bit more room for error than with the Blade or Pro Staff, which are probably better frames if you're 4.5 and above. If you can afford breaking strings, the Burn 100S plays great with Babolat Origin 16 strung at 55 lbs or higher.

Comments: I enjoy my new Burn 100S -- it is solid. However, you should demo the racquet first since feel is very subjective and receive the TW credit. Obviously, the racquet offers more power and spin than my previous Wilson Pro Staff 95S. The larger head and added power are controlled by the spin and I see my ball landing closer to the baseline with more spin, just like Bjorn! The racquet was strung with a poly/multi hybrid set-up at 55 lbs. The racquet with poly did slightly place more stress on my arm than my old racquet with multi stings but the small issue is well worth the improvement and the racquet can be modified with a full multifilament set-up. I guess a slightly bruised arm is much better than a badly bruised ego. I am a 50-year old 3.5 recreational doubles player.

Comments: In my prior review I wrote that the stock version of this frame was too light and lacked plow so I added 15 grams of lead (10 in the handle and 5 in the throat and head). Wow -- what a difference! It felt incredibly solid like the Pure Aero Tour but also lacked feel like the Pure Aero Tour. Using Volkl Cyclone 17 at 53 lbs. I had a little trouble with incoming pace and kept a lot of balls in the court, but honestly I don't really notice any difference between the Spin Effect and the standard 16x19 pattern in production of spin. Ended up really liking this racquet with the additional weight.

Comments: The good: loads of spin (comparable to Pure Aero), crisp and comfortable through the air and on contact, ergonomic inserts feel great for two handed backhand. The bad: feels ridiculously light in stock form, poor stability and very little plow. For reference, I'm a 4.5 USTA player.
