As Wimbledon began the second century of its illustrious history, the 1978 Ladies' Singles Final between Marina Navratilova and Chris Evert produced an absorbing match between these two great rivals. There could not have been two more contrasting characters on court, Navratilova with her fiery temperament and Evert, the cool 'ice maiden.' After a thrilling two weeks of competition, the two had advanced to face each other in what would become and enthralling contest. Right from the start there was a hint of a classic final in the making. Evert set the initial pace with a confident performance that saw her capture the first set, 6-2. In the second set, Navratilova calmed her nerves and fought back to win 6-4. With both players starting to find their form, the third set sea-sawed back and forth until Navratilova prevailed to take her first of many Wimbledon titles.
