Intro

Hybrid tennis strings are usually a marriage of opposites. They typically pair a stiff polyester monofilament with a soft natural gut to deliver greater benefits than can be found with a single string type. Lynx Spin2, the latest hybrid from Head, is not your typical hybrid. Rather than combining different string types, this innovative hybrid pairs two polyesters — one shaped, the other round, and both designed from scratch to work together in service of spin. According to our playtest team, the design works in spades, and it led to the kind of precise and effortless targeting that inspires confidence on full cuts. Our team also gave this hybrid an excellent score for feel and comfort, a result that bodes well for those who want the benefits of polyester without the overly harsh feedback that occasionally afflicts the breed. Although our team reported no downsides, one of our playtesters noted that Lynx Spin2 had only average tension maintenance. Ultimately, though, if you're looking for a hybrid with great feel and phenomenal spin, this impressive offering from Head is very hard to beat.

Control - Score: 89 / Power - Score: 67

With its low-powered response, predictable launch angle and spin-friendly precision, Lynx Spin2 gave our team outstanding command over the ball. Needless to say, Chris, with his well-known penchant for polyester, had no problem finding a groove with this poly/poly hybrid. He said, "I found a ton of control with Lynx Spin2. I hit this hybrid in many different racquets, and each time it helped give the racquet a very controlled and predictable response. I was able to judge the depth and direction of my shots very well, which allowed me to take big confident cuts at the ball. In my Head Speed Pro 2022 racquet I liked this hybrid at 52 pounds (mains and crosses). I found a good blend of a crisp response with just enough ball pocketing for even more touch and feel. The power level is low, as expected for a co-poly string, but because I was able to swing big I never found my shots lacking any pace."

For Michelle, Lynx Spin2's controlled response was a gateway to precise and powerful shotmaking. She explained, "This is definitely a hybrid with more control than power, which is exactly what I like. It gave me the confidence to swing big and flirt with the lines. The combo of the stiffer, round cross string with the spin-friendly, softer main string offered a great hitting experience and consistent feel on the stringbed. I think the pocketing kept me even more connected to the ball and allowed me to hit my targets with ease."

Spin - Score: 90

Lynx Spin2, with its sharp bite and vicious snapback, was meticulously engineered to help players load the ball with spin. For Chris, spin came very easily with this hybrid, especially after tinkering with the tension. He described, "Lynx Spin2 offered a nice solid and predictable level of spin. My slice backhand had lots of bite, and I was able to knife that shot well with this string. I found that lower tensions improved this hybrid's spin potential since it allowed more string movement and snapback to give the ball a little kick."

Even Michelle, with her flatter mechanics, found impressive spin with this hybrid. She said, "While I am never going to be the playtester hitting with the most spin or RPMs, I still appreciate having easy access to spin. Lynx Spin2 provided all the spin I could possibly need for any shot in my arsenal. It offered great bite on the ball and was very noticeable on angles and second serves. This spin also helped me hit deep balls that dropped just inside the court."

Comfort - Score: 80 / Feel - Score: 86

Made from two polyester monofilaments, Lynx Spin2 gave our team the kind of predictable response and connected feel that translates seamlessly into confident shotmaking. Although it doesn't have the plush comfort of a natural gut hybrid, this string felt plenty comfortable to Michelle. She explained, "I tend to gravitate toward strings with less feel, but I am starting to appreciate more comfortable setups. With that being said, I was able to test this string at several tensions and consistently thought the strings pocketed the ball really well and felt comfortable at contact. I would say this poly hybrid felt more comfortable than most of the polys I typically use."

Chris definitely appreciated Lynx Spin2's crisp and precise response. He said, "I liked the feel of this hybrid. I found a very solid and predictable feel from the stringbed. I could really trust this hybrid and played confidently with it in my racquets. I liked the solid sound off the stringbed and enjoyed the medium-firm response. The feel was crisp enough to get me connected to my shots, and Lynx Spin2 was just soft enough to get that sense of ball pocketing without feeling muted."

Playability Duration - Score: 73

All tennis strings lose tension, especially polyester monofilaments, which tend to become unplayable long before they snap. Although Lynx Spin2 is certainly not immune to tension loss, it held its playability surprisingly well for Chris. He said, "I was very impressed by how long the playability of Lynx Spin2 lasted. I was able to hit this setup for three weeks without losing too much control, feel or comfort. I found the level of spin to be best with the strings fresh, but I still got decent spin even after many hours on court."

"The playability duration of this string seemed to be about average," added Michelle. "After two weeks, it definitely felt like some of the bite and tension diminished just slightly — nothing detrimental, though. I had no issues with an extremely bouncy stringbed, but I loved this string the most and felt it played the best the first couple of days."

Overall - Score: 86

What type of player would you recommend this to?

Michelle - "Players who love control and bite from their stringbed. Poly players looking for something fun and new to try."

Chris - "Fans of co-polys looking for a predictable and trustworthy stringbed with solid access to spin should give this one a try. I think players will be impressed by the playability duration, too."

Likes

Chris - "Good spin, tons of control, nice feel, it lasts well and comes in TW colors!"

Michelle - "Great control, good feel, awesome access to spin. Looks great installed in basically every racquet! Something different and new to hit with."

Dislikes

Michelle - "If I am being picky, the string has just an average playability duration, and I found myself wanting a fresh restring after a couple of weeks."

Chris - "No complaints."

Comparing the string to others they've tried, our testers said:

Chris - "Weiss CANNON Blue Rock N Power comes to mind as does Prince Vortex Triad. I find the best connection to the ball and most consistent response out of Lynx Spin2. The other two offer a tad more spin but don't last nearly as well or feel as good."

Michelle - "Lynx Spin2 felt more comfortable and a bit softer than Lynx Tour — not sure if it is the blending of the smooth and shaped string or what. I think Lynx Tour pockets the ball really well, but I find this hybrid to pocket just as well, if not better! It's definitely in my wheelhouse in terms of control-oriented poly strings."
